The Squirrelpocalypse

July 1, 2011 by frozenrevolutionary

Today is momentous for 2 reasons.  First and foremost, it is Canada Day.  Secondly, and possibly more momentous, it is the squirrelpocalypse.  Today I have agreed to rid a friend’s yard of squirrels which are wreaking havoc in the wiring of their shed amongst other things.

This brings to mind an important discussion of respect for wildlife.  Many southerners don’t understand wildlife protection like the northern (and all really,) aboriginals do.  They think that anything that threatens an animal or tree is evil.  They have the luxury of thinking that because they live in nice cities where they can take public transit, and not come in contact with wildlife, and can sit on their moral high-horses and judge us who don’t have the convenience of city life.

The Aboriginal people of the South Slave understand that wildlife should be protected, because it provides for them. Yes, they kill animals, to survive.  They do it as humanely as possible because they respect the contribution of the animals to their own survival.  They understand that yes, it is a practical fact of life that animals must die for us to live.

But just because they (we) understand the necessity of hunting, doesn’t mean that they (we) don’t respect the wildlife.  Quite the contrary, the aboriginal peoples of the world appreciate wildlife on a level that can’t be comprehended by a lot of folk.  They treat them with the utmost of respect and mercy, and always strive for a clean, quick, painless kill.  These animals are providing for their life, they owe them their respect and consideration.  That’s an attitude a lot more people should take up.

Anyways, it’s off to High Tea, then to bag me some squirrels.

EDIT:  I got 1 squirrel.

It took over 4 hours, but any hunter knows that patience is the key.
