Occupy Wall Street may very well be the defining event of our generation—perhaps even this half of the century. This may be the beginning of the end for the plutocracy that has gripped the great people of the world by their throats for the past thirty years. This may be the era when the world collectively, finally says “Enough!”

But if history is to have anything to say, it is that the chances of this are slim. True, people are out in the streets with their fist in their air, after years of the left scratching their heads and bemoaning the lack of consciousness in the population. But this has happened many times in the past few centuries—and yet, despite some change and reform, the old order and the elite classes remained virtually untouched.

Will we make the same mistake as our predecessors? Will we be content to yell in the streets and in front of fancy buildings and rich homes, expecting them to toss down their table-scraps in the form of “reform?” Will we cry and stamp our feet, hoping that perhaps a few of those fascists at the top will see fit to write some fancy legislation addressing some silly little issue that nonetheless serves to placate our rage?

I say, no. I say that we recognize that inherent, systemic nature of our political economy, and the abuse that is written into its form. No real reform can come from a government dominated by individuals from Wall Street, Big Oil, and Defense. No real reform can come from a Congress monopolized by two parties who both participate in the blatant corruption that pundits have the gall to call “lobbying” and “free speech.” No President who has gotten more money in “donations” from Wall Street than any other President in history will follow through on “change.”

You scream for higher taxes? But for what? So that it can go straight to spending on our War of Terror, War on Drugs, subsidies to oil and agriculture? And many of you yell out for free healthcare and college. But here, the left must recognize the truth in the critiques of libertarians and anarchists—do we really have the idiocy to trust our state, in an unchanged form, to properly implement universal healthcare? Do we not recognize that socialized medicine with our current regime will have us on the chopping block for wealthy insurance companies and pharmaceutical cartels?

The Revolution is not something that you can put on a sign. It shouldn’t be something that you can put on a sign. The Revolution is complex—it requires dedicated thought and nuances, a solid underpinning of not just demands and goals, but also the procedure itself. If we are serious about change, we must be that change, and not delegate the task to a system that has proven time and time again to be inept. We must craft our own laws, draft our own legislation, push forward our own candidates. We must topple this two-party dictatorship that ostracizes third parties and good ideas. We must flood not just the streets, but the hallways of Washington with our ideas and spirit.

And it won’t be easy. It will take years, if not decades, to fully cleanse this system. And it may be that this initial movement may fizzle out, killed by a successful propaganda war from the elites that alienates us from the hundreds of millions of common citizens who are our natural allies.

But even if it does, still recognize this—we have been out in the light, and we have seen each others faces. We have counted our numbers, thrown our ideas around, and laid bare the truly radical nature of the public’s subconscious.

If we fail today, we shall only come back another day, stronger than ever before. And that is the one thing that They fail to realize: This Revolution is inevitable!
